Skating School of Central Florida

Learn. Grow.
Perform. Dream.

A skating program designed for every level — not just competition. For more than thirty years the Skating School has helped children learn to skate, build confidence, perform, make friendships, and discover just how far they want skating to take them.

For most of our students, everything they need happens right here at Semoran Skateway.

Where we differ

Every skater
starts somewhere.

Our philosophy is different from many traditional competitive skating programs. And for the skater who eventually dreams of something bigger? That opportunity is here too.

We believe a child should be able to have a complete and rewarding skating experience without having to travel, compete, or make the financial commitment that comes with competitive skating.

How it works

Every great skater
starts with the basics

Four steps, and a skater can stop at any one of them and still have got everything they came for.

  1. 1

    Learn to Skate

Where the journey begins. LRN 2 SK8 is open to anyone who wants to become a better skater — the fundamentals that build confidence, control, balance and proper technique, refined over decades.

Some students come because they want to skate confidently with their friends. Some discover they want to learn more. Both are successes.

  2. 2

    Join the Skating School

Students who want to keep developing move into the Skating School, where skating becomes much more than learning individual skills. A variety of classes and training modules keep students learning, progressing and enjoying the sport.

  3. 3

    Perform

Two performances every year, right here at Semoran Skateway. Routines to learn, costumes, teamwork, and family in the seats.

Goals, preparation, accomplishment — most of what competitive skating offers, without families spending weekends travelling from competition to competition.

  4. 4

    Compete, if you want to

For students who develop the ability, desire and commitment, advanced training and coaching are here — up to regional, national and world level. Our program has developed skaters who reached the highest levels of the sport.

It is the next opportunity, not the purpose of the whole program. That decision should come after a skater has found a genuine passion for it, not before.

Inside the Skating School

Three ways
to keep going

Students progress according to their ability and interest — not because they are expected to become competitive skaters. Call (407) 834-9106 and we will talk you through where to start.

  1. Dance

Dancing on skates. Movement, rhythm, choreography and contemporary styles of dance.

Rather than practicing isolated skills, students learn how those skills work together while performing to music.

  2. Singles

Jumping and spinning, for students who want an additional challenge: spins, jumps, footwork, edges, balance, control and performance skills.

  3. Figures

The basic fundamentals of roller figure skating.

A complete experience

Right here
at home

A student does not have to become a champion for skating to have an enormous impact on their life. Through the Skating School, students develop:

  • Strong skating ability
  • Confidence
  • Coordination and athleticism
  • Musicality and performance
  • Discipline
  • Friendships
  • Teamwork
  • Personal goals
  • A lifelong connection to skating

They can take classes. They can perform. They can improve. They can belong to something. And they can do virtually all of it without leaving Semoran Skateway.

Where it came from

More than thirty years
of skating experience

The Skating School was founded more than thirty years ago by Anthony Berger. What began as a personal passion for coaching grew into a complete skating-school philosophy and training system.

Over the years the program developed recreational skaters, performers, competitive athletes and champions, becoming one of the country’s highly successful skating programs and producing skaters who reached national and world-class levels.

Today that philosophy continues through a new generation of leadership. Anthony’s primary responsibility is now overseeing Semoran Skateway itself rather than coaching students day to day. He remains connected to the school he created, providing guidance, program philosophy and support to its coaching team.

A proven program with decades of history, continuing through the coaches it shaped.

Anthony Berger

Founder & Program Advisor

Anthony founded the Skating School more than thirty years ago and developed the philosophy and training system behind the program.

During his full-time coaching career the school grew into one of the country’s successful skating programs, developing skaters from their first lessons through national and world-level competition.

Today he focuses primarily on operating Semoran Skateway while continuing to advise the school — helping preserve the philosophy, standards and long-term vision that have defined it for more than three decades.

Sean Folstein

Skating School Head Coach

Few people understand this rink’s skating philosophy better than someone who grew up inside it. Sean began skating in the program at four years old and developed through the very system he now leads.

He oversees the day-to-day operation of the skating school, teaches its students, and carries the program’s philosophy into its next generation — first as a student, now as a coach.

Michael Vickey

Senior Coach & Mentor

With many years of coaching experience and a history of developing successful skaters, Michael brings an important depth of knowledge to the coaching team.

He works with students within the skating school as well as through private instruction, helping skaters refine their technique, strengthen individual skills and keep progressing toward their own goals.

As a Senior Coach and Mentor he also passes along the experience, traditions and culture that have always been part of the Skating School.

Petra Daney

Senior Technical Coach & Program Mentor

A former German National Champion and multiple-time World Champion, Petra is internationally respected for her expertise in roller figure skating.

For more than twenty years she mentored Anthony Berger through the development of the Skating School. Her knowledge and understanding of technique helped shape many of the principles the program is built on.

Petra still works directly with our skaters, helping those who want to strengthen their fundamentals and develop the precision and control that make a complete skater.

The point of all this

There is no single definition
of a successful skater

For one child, success may mean finally skating confidently around the rink. For another, learning their first spin. For another, performing in their first show. And for a very small number, competing for a national or world championship.

Our job is not to decide how far a skater should go. It is to give them the skills, opportunities and environment to discover that for themselves.
